How to stop beating yourself up

FEATURED

Here’s a resolution for you… stop ‘should-ing’ on yourself!

It’s been a game-changer of a resolution in my life and is right up there with the two resolutions I make (and successfully keep) every year:

1. Give up smoking – an easy win as I’ve never smoked.

2. Make out with my husband more – another easy one and fun too!

Kicking the word ‘should’ out of my vocab saw an end to me using guilt as a vulnerability hangover. Prior to that I was a shoulding expert.

“I should go to the gym.”

“I should clean the house.”

“I should stop gobbling mince pies and Terry’s chocolate orange as if it’s an Olympic sport.”

The problem with should is that it implies shame. It’s great for beating yourself up, but unsurprisingly, shame doesn’t encourage you to make space for joy. Positive words, however, have the power to get us going!

Here’s my secret:

Swap ‘should’ for ‘Would like to’. It’s a tiny shift that has a huge impact.

Make a conscious effort to change your language and you’ll be surprised at the results.
