Product Description

When Gary Thorn joined my Year 1 class his profile said that he ‘knew all of his sounds’. That actually meant he could tell you what sound a grapheme made if you flashed a card at him. Unfortunately he couldn’t hear any of those phonemes in words, struggled to blend them together to read words and was unable to use any of this knowledge in his independent was writing.

My Jazzy Skills Assessment Pack was created so that I could quickly find the gaps, not just in grapheme recognition, but also in blending/segmenting skills and the level to which children are able to apply all of this to writing.

Each assessment allows you to unpick what’s missing so that you know exactly where to start with planning. All of the skill assessments can be completed as a full class.

Jazzy Grapheme Grannies

Well, you’ve now got more grannies than you can shake a stick at and before you go off and invent a new trading card game with them, let me suggest a couple useful assessments you can use them for!

This assessment is just one part of my Jazzy Skills Assessment Pack and focuses on establishing how quickly children can process a written grapheme into a spoken sound – the foundational step on the route to reading.

HOW TO USE

Organisation

I find that this is easiest used in small groups or 1-1. You can use your Jazzy Grapheme Grannies with a whole class for teaching and letter sound games, but for assessment you really need to hear each child say the sound.

You’re looking to establish their current reality so that you can repeat the assessment later and measure progress. That means a yes or no answer to the assessment questions. And ‘yes’ means they really own that knowledge or skill rather than ‘yes-sort-of-with-a-bit-of-prompting-if-the-wind-is-blowing-in-the-right-direction’!

Materials

Print, laminate and cut up the cards or leave them as whole sheets and miss out the lamination stage. Show, or point to each card in turn as ams the children to tell you the sound. The grids are for marking the assessments and are explained below.

Assessment

As the child reads the sounds, simply add a dot for each sound they name correctly. If they same something else, you can write it tin the box, but this is most useful for establishing whether there rely own the sound or have a vague knowledge of it!

Do give every child the opportunity to attempt the long vowel digraphs as well as the alphabet and short vowel graphemes. Long vowel graphemes occur more frequently in language and so may be recognised more easily that grapheme <v> which is uncommon.

Marking

The last two sheets are your marking grids. The first of those grids contains alphabet graphemes (including short vowel graphemes) and consonant digraphs. The second grid contains long vowel digraphs. Often children may be able to recognise alphabet graphemes but are less successful with the consonant and long vowel digraphs.

Each grid has 15 lines and I’m aware classes of this size are a luxury! Photocopy each grid so that you have enough lines for each child in your class.

What Next?

Once you have completed the grids you’re able to see at a glance where they gaps are and establish a clear idea of where to start with each child. This might translate as starting from scratch with some, reviewing the consonant and long vowel digraphs with others and moving onto developing reading with those that can give you two or three ways of writing sounds.

You could split your class into the three groups above, give them all the same lesson introduction input and then differentiate the activities so that those key skills or knowledge gaps are addressed for each group. That’s whatever the topic or subject! Reading is an over arching skill and children need real ownership of all the skills related to writing skills in order to apply these beyond phonics and literacy lessons throughout the entire curriculum.

Jazzy Lazy Teacher Spelling Assessment

Find out why your children are not applying their phonics skills to their writing.

  • Do you find that, some of your children are great readers but less skilled at spelling and writing?
  • Are your children reluctant to write?
  • Do your older children use fabulous vocabulary when recounting a story, but stick to ‘safe’ words that they can spell in their writing?

My Lazy Teacher Spelling Assessment is a quick and fun way of identifying the gaps in spelling ability. Once you know where the gaps in knowledge are, you can target specific elements and fill them in!

This resource enables you to pinpoint where children are struggling and apply quick and targeted fixes to help them progress. An invaluable and effective assessment, ready made for you to use tomorrow!

Ace your next Phonics Screening Check and assess print blending skills.

  • Do your children struggle to blend words with short vowel sounds?
  • Have your children misread long vowel digraphs in words such as ‘ai’ and ‘ay’?
  • Do your children fins blending words with split digraph (magic e) words difficult?

Ready to print, downloadable resource of over 700 blending cards. Each set consists of word cards containing 2, 3, 4 and 5 sound words split into groups:

  • 114 cards using only alphabet graphemes (e.g. as ig, sas, pell)
  • A further 114 cards using only consonant digraphs (e.g. cha, ang, chem)
  • A whopping 216 cards using the different graphemes for spelling the five main long vowel sounds /ai/, /igh/, oa/, /oa/ and /ue/(e.g. aif, bleau, spleet)
  • Another 90 word cards using the split digraph magic e (e.g. ade, drink, frane)
